tOSSad project

The tOSSad project aims to improve the outcomes of the F/OSS communities throughout Europe by supporting the coordination and networking of these communities by means of state-of-the-art studies, national program initiations, usability cases, curriculum development and the development of collaborative information portals and web-based groupware.

Various promotional materials ready

Over the last few weeks we have prepared the PDF version of tOSSad newsletter, together with a 3fold brochure and a poster. These materials will be handed out in the first international F/OSS conference (OSS 2005) in Genova, Italy as well as the info day in Brussels between 11-14 July, 2005. Many tOSSad partners will be acting and speaking about tOSSad project there, also. Go to the files section and download all documents.

WP 3 Usability

09:00 – 12:30 Workshop about usability of F/OSS (moderation IAT) The main focus was on the importants, market relevance and improvement potential of F/OSS office and other desktop applications. The results will be processed and included in Deliverable 4: F/OSS usability workshop report (by IAT). This deliverable will be available at the end of May.

12:30 – 13:30 Lunch

13:30 – 15:00 Discussions on the several tasks to be fulfilled in WP3

  • Task 2-4: Further proceeding Usability Study (ULIBIN, VIE, Xlab)

    • First structuring of the questionnaire -> ULIBIN; deadline: May 10th 2005

    • Feedback and suggestions of (additional) questions or topics to be asked.. ->all; deadline: May 20th 2005

    • Design of draft quationnaire -> ULIBIN; deadline: June 2nd 2005

    • Revision and finalisation of the questionnaire -> XLAB, viewrope, BIS; deadline: June 20th 2005

    • Set up of “web questionnaire” -> XLAB; deadline: July 1st 2005

    • Testing of the questionnaire -> all; deadline: July 8th 2005

    • All partners are asked to find people to fill in the questionnaire until September 30th

    • Analysing and documentation -> mainly ULIBIN, viewrope, (UEKAE); deadline: October 31st 2005

  • Task 5: tomorrows` requirements (IAT, PDA), deadline month 18

    • Up to now, the main focus will be on requirements towards:

      • Wearables

      • F/OSS and other mobile devices

      • Voice interaction

  • Task 6-7: Design and conduction of Usability Tests (UEKAE/IAT, PDA, ULIBIN, BIS)

    • Target groups for the usabilty tests in the different countries are students and people from public administrations; the objective should be to conduct usability tests with about 8 to 10 test persons.

    • F/OSS: Office applications (in particular word processor) and e-mail client have been identified to be of most relevance for the usabilty tests. IAT will conduct a (pre-) usabilty test with students from Austria. Within this test, OpenOffice.org applications will be tested. First results are supposed to be available at the next tOSSad meeting in July. Based on these experiences and test scenarios the upcoming tOSSadusability tests shall be conducted.

  • Task 8: Usability development guideline (IAT/UEKAE, PDA), deadline: month 18

    • There are several guidelines available dealing with usability aspects (Apple, GNOME, KDE, Windows). In order not to write yet another usability guideline the first step of the task is to compare the different guidelines, find matches and mismatches as well as identify missing parts. Deadline for gathering this information is September 2005.
